Induction and recovery from anesthesia with isoflurane are rapid. The level of anesthesia may be changed rapidly with isoflurane. Isoflurane is a profound respiratory depressant, and respiration must be monitored closely in the horse and dog and supported when necessary. Increasing depth of anesthesia with isoflurane may increase hypotension and respiratory depression. Ketamine HCl is well tolerated by cats and primates when administered by intramuscular injection. Fasting prior to induction of anesthesia or restraint with ketamine HCl is not essential, however, when preparing for elective surgery, it is advisable to withhold food for at least 6 hours prior to administration of ketamine HCl. Ketamine HCl may be used in cats for restraint or as the sole anesthetic agent for diagnostic or minor, brief, surgical procedures that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation. It may be used in primates for restraint.
