Dr. Weinrauch focuses first on educating veterinary
students while still in school. When they learn about
the cost-of-care and communications challenges
early in their careers, they are better prepared
to cope with the realities of being in practice. In
addition, a student may turn to a mentor for help
in determining whether to specialize in a particular
area or become a general practitioner.
The education and support a mentor can provide
should continue throughout the veterinarian's career
and into retirement. After practicing a few years, a
veterinarian might be experiencing burnout and is
questioning whether it's time to change careers. A
mentor could help explore other options, including
different industries altogether. At retirement,
a practice owner could use a mentor's help to
determine whether to sell to an individual or group.
The aim is to develop a curriculum that isn't currently
taught in veterinary schools—but should be.
Creating this curriculum has been a major focus of
MightyVet; today, the organization offers free CE
webinars such as:
• Ethics Exhaustion: When Your Sense of Right
is Wronged: Being asked to euthanize a healthy
animal—or one whose owner can't or won't pay
for treatment—are common examples of this
exhaustion.
• CPR for the Veterinary Soul: This webinar
is presented by Not One More Vet (NOMV), a
nonprofit organization where veterinarians come
together to share their personal feelings about
work and life.
• Confronting the Stigma of Suicide: One in six
veterinarians have thought about committing
suicide. Attendees learn the early warning signs
and what to do when they're observed.
Other topics include:
• Veterinary Self-Worth and the Psychology of
Money
• The Secret to Overcoming Client Objections
• Talking Money: How to Understand and Negotiate
Compensation
• Changing the Culture of Veterinary Sacrifice
