56 I ICT TODAY The number of speakers that can be connected to a single amplifier is determined by adding up the combined wattage of all the speakers and comparing it to the specification capability of the amplifier. For example, an amplifier with 40-watt capability can serve 16 speakers set to 2.5 watts output, 40 speakers set to 1 watt output, and even 160 speakers set to 0.25 watt output. The 70 volt speakers are wired in parallel, making it easy to daisy chain from one speaker to the next (Figure 14). BECOMING AN ICT/AV EXPERT Becoming familiar with best practices ensures that customers benefit from a reliable, high-quality IT/AV system for years to come. For more infor- mation on AV best practices and standards, ICT installers should consult BICSI's Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM), 7th edition. ICT designers should consult the AV sections in BICSI's Telecommunications Distri- bution Methods Manual (TDMM), 14th Edition. Venturing beyond the comfort zone of the traditional data network, end users frequently wing it when considering the size, quantity and quality of display screens, as well as types and placement of speakers. Rather, it is important to apply the correct theory behind the proper configurations to achieve optimal sight and sound. A thoughtful, methodical approach to AV device planning reduces user complaints and frustration, eliminates callbacks, and minimizes lost revenue due to mis-designs—while helping to propel the ICT professional to the next level of audiovisual expertise.
