62 I ICT TODAY In inpatient substance abuse facilities and other similar healthcare venues, healthcare administrators have a tremendous responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment for all employees and patients that work or stay in the facility. For this actual project, one of the important requirements was to restrict access to dormitory areas based on various reasons and parameters. All patients within the facility were assigned a category depending on their assigned sleeping location ("A" or "B"). There was also a category assigned as "employee." Everyone in the 50,000 square foot facility was given a credential card. When the credential cards were initially created, digital images were obtained of facial TELECOMMUNICATIONS ROOM TELECOMMUNICATIONS ROOM ELECTRONIC ACCESS CONTROL - SINGLE DOOR CARD READER 2-POST RELAY RACK 2-POST RELAY RACK 2 1 2 2 5 5 6 8 9 10 11 12 7 CR 3 2 (2) 4" CONDUITS TYPICAL POLE DOOR EGRESS INGRESS FIGURE 5: The EAC and CCTV integration schematic at the inpatient substance abuse facility. features of all individuals and stored within the network video recorder (NVR) and were integrated with the EAC system. The EAC system and CCTV systems were integrated via software and networking protocols. The EAC and CCTV system headends were colocated in the telecommunications room (TR) and connected to the customer-provided layer 2 network infrastructure via balanced twisted-pair Cat 6A cabling. The main purpose of the integration was to allow the safety and security officers to analyze quickly any attempts at a forced entry and to visually document exactly who was entering the facility at any given time (Figure 5).
