The Burroughs Market Report addresses the usage of different MMF types over time. Use of OM1 62.5 and OM2 50 µm fiber has declined to the single digits in terms of percentage. The OM3 held steady for many years and is now beginning to decline, while OM4 usage is increasing rapidly (Figure 2). The Burroughs Market Report includes the small amount of OM5 with OM4 but will break that out in subsequent reports once OM5 volumes begin to increase. Global usage data, published by CRU, shows that usage of OM1 and OM2 are declining, while OM3 and OM4 50 µm fibers continue to increase. Shown in light blue, OM5 is still a small percentage of overall use (Figure 1). It is expected to pick up, especially since IEEE has published the 400G SR4.2 Ethernet standard that includes the WDM capability of OM5 and the 50 percent greater reach over OM4. Overall usage of multimode fiber worldwide continues to grow, reinforcing its economic benefit for short reach applications. FIGURE 2: Usage of MMF types for North America.
