There's a spectrum of digital adoption among veterinary practices. At one end, there are those that are all-in on technology. They've implemented digital tools to better serve customers' needs and deliver a higher level of care for pets and horses, while increasing efficiency and revenues. At the opposite end are the practices that are primarily analog. They haven't yet adopted digital solutions to streamline practice management and customer communications. Their customer attraction and retention rates may be declining, and they're losing revenues to online retailers. Digital practice attributes: simplify where you stand on the digital spectrum To improve your practice's digital capabilities, it's helpful to have an objective sense of your current state. Seeing how your business stacks up can help show you where you have opportunities—and which digital innovations can help improve customer service and pet health, while also making your practice more successful. Pain points of pre-digital practices If you skew toward the pre- digital side of the spectrum, you'll likely observe some or all of the following items in your typical practice operations: • Customers must call the office to schedule an appointment. • Staff members make calls to remind customers of upcoming appointments. • The practice sends reminder postcards or calls lapsed customers who are overdue for services. • Patient records are stored in physical paper files. • Customers must call to renew their pets' prescriptions and come in to pick up medications. • Customers who buy their pets' special foods must come to the clinic to pick them up. Digital practice advantages On the other side of this digital model, by contrast, hallmarks of a digital practice include: • Customers use the web to schedule appointments and place orders 24/7. • Staff communicates with customers via email, text message, and social media for appointment reminders, confirmations, post-visit follow- ups, and general pet education. • Patient records are easily accessible on any device via digital recordkeeping. • Telehealth appointments make pet exams and client engagement more convenient. • Online ordering for food and prescriptions delivers products to the customer's door. Regardless of where you are on the spectrum of adoption, almost every practice has an opportunity to leverage digital solutions to drive practice efficiency, strengthen customer relationships, and improve the lives of the animals in their care. It's a smart business move, and it's a means to make life easier for you and your staff, and the pets and pet owners you serve.
