While the global community is experiencing unforeseen changes to the way people work
and live, the ongoing need for commercial and residential buildings will remain. Looking
to the future of construction and what the "new normal" in the industry will look like, the
need for new, smarter interconnected buildings will likely expand exponentially. This new
breed of smart buildings will have come a long way from mere shells housing independent
systems for lighting, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), and telecom.
Internally, these subsystems still provide light, comfort, and safety. However, it will
be increasingly important that they share data and information to communicate with
building managers, occupants, and the city's power grid.
