28 I ICT TODAY Streaming allows lessons to go to an unlimited number of online learners in real time, synchronous with live classroom sessions or as recordings. The recordings can be made available on set schedules or anytime on-demand. The difference between streaming and UC is that streaming is pretty much a one-way medium. There is no in-app face-to-face interaction between instructors and remote students as there is with UC platforms. Video streaming services do allow viewers to post reactions and comments via chat, which provides minimal interactivity. Private Streaming Streaming in its most basic form, called private streaming, encodes audio and video originating from a live or recorded teaching session into a compressed digital bit stream and sends it to viewers over the internet. A typical private streaming setup is shown in Figure 6. Public hosting services are free, but they are inherently less secure than enterprise platforms. Audiovisual system requirements for private streaming involve three key performance parameters: image quality, latency, and bandwidth utilization. The video compression algorithm used by the codec determines the balance between these parameters. Most educators want to deliver the best video possible to their students. If the predominant application is live streaming with real-time reactions and com- ments from students, low latency is important to avoid distracting lags between the streamed video and viewer comment posts.
