Vehicle Registration According to the Cascade County Motor Vehicle Division, new residents are required to register vehicles locally upon getting a job. To buy license plates, visit the Cascade County Treasurer's office at 121 4th St N, call (406) 454-6860, or visit Driver's License Military personnel on active duty in Montana who have a valid license issued by another state and who are not employed in Montana, except as a member of the armed forces, are not required to hold a Montana driver's license. Other individuals with out-of-state licenses must: Apply for a Montana driver's license within 60 days of moving to the state if seeking a non-commercial driver's license and within 30 days if requiring a commercial license. Be sure to schedule an appointment online at before going to the DMV. • Provide two forms of proof of identity, including a current driver's license or a certified birth certificate. Provide proof of Montana residency, including a state income- tax return, a state voter-registration card or a receipt for state taxes paid.
