Spring is in the air! I don't have to tell you it has been a rough winter with COVID restrictions and polar vortexes. I for one am happy the days are longer, and the weather is warmer. We hope you get a chance to enjoy the outdoors in one of our parks. Many of you might be wondering if Harrer Pool is going to open this summer. As of the middle of March, it is highly unlikely Harrer Pool will open. Due to the excessive delay in receiving the construction permit from the State of Illinois' Department of Public Health we could not begin until after the new year. Staff , the architect, and the construction manager worked diligently to meet a tight schedule for submission of the permit. We did not receive the permit within a normal, pre-COVID return time. Receipt of the permit took more than twice as long than expected. Our construction team is doing everything within their power to cut into this delay. More favorable weather would benefi t the project greatly. We will know more on the completion date later in the spring. We are planning on opening Oriole Pool this year. Due to COVID restrictions, we will not be off ering season membership or accepting "walk ups" this year. Additionally, to visit the pool, resident will need to make reservations online so the park district can ensure COVID compliance to attendance size. More information on the procedure can be found on pages 16-19. As the weather is consistently warmer, work on Austin Park will continue. The remaining work to be completed includes installing the rubber surface material, fi nishing installing plants and other landscaping needs, and installing the cornhole boards. In recent months, we have been asked about the basketball court. We do plan to replace the court surfacing and move the backboards from the middle to the ends for "full-court" play. Watch our website for information on our Grand Opening! We are planning to off er a variety of programs and events in the summer months. Camps, aquatics, concerts, movies in the park, and others. We are currently planning these activities under current State of Illinois COVID mitigations. As the months progress, we may need to increase restrictions to comply with mitigation guidelines. We might even be able to loosen restrictions. We will continue to obey guidelines from state, county, and local requirements.
