We've survived the winter. Finally, time to defrost ourselves from the frigid winter air and embrace the new spring energy. Trade in the winter parkas for something a lile lighter (but not too light… let's get real this is Montana aer all). It's time to relax on our patios and appreciate the birds chirping, flowers blooming, and a full glass of wine in our hand. I'm not talking a glass of red – that was so last season. Not even a crisp white - save that for summer. So where does that leave us, rose? Nope, it's 2021 and I'm feeling spicy! is year, I'm pouring orange wines all spring. Yes, you read that right, orange wines. No, not wine made from actual oranges or even a mimosa cocktail, but wine that is orange in color and a blissful Spring surprise for your tastebuds. Let me give you the low down on orange wines. Orange wines are technically just white wines that have been made in a way that is typical for red. is means that the wine is fermented on the grape skins to give it a particular color and flavor. When a white grape is fermented on its skins, it develops an orange hue that can vary from a light straw color to deep orange depending on how long the wine was in contact with the grape skins. A white wine will take on more red wine flavor characteristics when it is fermented on the skins. e wine will have a fuller body and heavier tannins, like a red wine, but will maintain the acidity commonly found in a white wine. Prey awesome, huh? is method of winemaking was originally developed thousands of years ago by Georgians (the country, not state) and has gained recent popularity with some of the more experimental, innovative winemakers today. You may also hear orange wine referred to as skin-contact-white, Ramato, or auburn wine. What are my go-to Orange wines? RAMBLING VINES TEXT BY BRITTANY EDGREN Disco Nap – St. Reginald Willamee Valley, OR - Skin contact Pinot Gris is wine is a stunning tangerine color, and smells of rich Tawny Port fresh from the barrel. It has an out-of -this world peach buerscotch flavor palee and pairs perfectly with a spicy Pad ai. In other words, this wine is what my Saturday night dreams are made of ! Orange is the New Rose ' Only Zuul – Swick Wines Newberg, OR - Skin contact Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris blend One of my all-time favorites from the wine maker extraordinaire, Joe Swick. is wine may look like a light red wine or even a rose but it is indeed an orange wine. It has a beautiful watermelon color and smells of ripe plums. It tastes like nectarines and orange blossoms and pairs perfectly with some fresh ahi tuna tacos (don't forget to add the mango salsa). Now go pour yourself a glass or two and soak in that sunshine! I know I will be. –Until next time, cheers!
