DAY TRIP
Benchmark to Indian Point Meadows (10.5 miles)
Less than a quarter mile into your journey, you'll cross over the South Fork
of the Sun River using a sturdy pack bridge. e cool shade of the towering
pines ends abruptly several miles later, as the trail ventures through the
aermath of an earlier forest fire. Sharp cracking sounds in the distance signal
that the standing dead trees continue to fall to the ground, making way for
thick forest regrowth.
Without tree cover, this section of the journey can become incredibly
hot in the summer months. Take time to cool down and to replenish water
containers when you reach the second pack bridge over the West Fork of the
Sun River.
Turn le just past the bridge to begin your journey across the open prairie on
the north side of the riverbank. e low-lying forest beyond the prairie hills
has several primitive campsites. Visitors are asked to refrain from camping in
the delicate flora of Indian Point Meadows that lie further down the trail.
Relax at the base of the wall on the saddle of Cliff Mountain.
The Chinese Wall rises above the forest in the distance.
