SiG MT 65 Holly Matkin is a native Montanan who lives with her husband at the foot of the Elkhorn Mountains. She covers a wide variety of topics as a freelance writer for multiple local and national publications, and especially enjoys writing travel, history, and human interest pieces. S MT e trail makes an abrupt climb aer the Burnt Creek crossing, then follows a westward path along the tributary. e splendor of the Chinese Wall gradually unfolds as you emerge from the forest and meander through the meadows, flanked by vivid rainbows of wildflowers. e route climbs sharply to the 7,700-foot saddle of Cliff Mountain, revealing more of the Wall's magnificence with every step. Aer being greeted by a blast of cool wind while admiring the stunning panoramic view of the trail we had traveled, we turned around to discover an even more expansive stretch of the Chinese Wall extending to the north. e appearance of the massive limestone rock face evolves constantly in the shadows of the clouds, and its enormity skews the perception of the size of the endless sea of conifers below. Snowy peaks stretch into the distance on all sides, as the Wall forever barricades east from west. Take in the incomprehensible scene while lying on the enormous stone slab at the top of the saddle, or venture further towards the wall to find the treacherous trail that runs along it's rocky edge. Burnt Creek to Cliff Mountain and the Chinese Wall (1.7 miles) ose interested in hiking along the base of the wall can continue heading north to Larch Hill Pass. Others may wish to loop back towards the Benchmark trailhead by turning east on Moose Creek Trail, while some hikers simply retrace their original path. Whichever trail you choose, the Bob Marshall Wilderness never disappoints. Choose Your Path Welcome to the best night's rest you'll ever have.
