RETAILOBSERVER.COM MAY 2021 34 FIRST PLACE / SMALL CONTEMPORARY BATH (under 250 sq. ft.) continued from page 13 Cocoplum — This powder room was designed as part of a two-story traditional house situated on a spacious piece of land located in the exclusive Cocoplum neighborhood next to Florida's beautiful Biscayne Bay. We were asked to design the renovation/addition to the existing house and make its interior spaces flow naturally. This powder room was constrained by an extremely narrow space with tall ceiling heights, resulting in unusual proportions and demanding creative placement of functional and aesthetic elements to maximize space and heighten drama according to the client's wishes. An additional challenge was integrating this powder room, with its small dimensions and dramatic, intense colors, with the rest of the house, where natural light, and organic, navigable pathways offered stark contrast to the powder room's more opulent design. We identified a unique, modular lighting fixture as a starting point to evolve a cohesive theme, drawing inspiration from its soft red glow and geometric curves. This provided a dramatic red to center the client's desired palette and counterbalance dark walls and an all-black sink, faucet and wall-mounted toilet. The ceiling-mounted Goccia faucet from Gessi added a striking linear element as a focal point of drama. In contrast, the Neo-Metro toilet seems to disappear into the space, merging into an identically colored wall to maximize space and flow while allowing the nearby artwork, containing abstract red hues drawn from the ceiling fixture, to take center stage. The Zero Pedestal Sink from Stone Forest further enlarges the space, providing additional functional surface area for the placement of soaps and towels while anchoring the design with a sleek point of focus naturally embraced by the overall flow. These dramatic pieces provided balance and proportion, resulting in a powder room that celebrates elegance, simplicity and a dark, contemporary edge.
