MAY 2021 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 37 Kallman Master Bath – The master bath in this newly constructed home has a beautifully long sight line from the entry off the master suite to the end of the room, terminating with a soaking tub, in an alcove, under a triple casement window. Accentuating the length, the illuminated barrel ceiling also creates a sense of height. I added additional visual drama by using a custom marble and glass hand-laid mosaic as an inlaid rug along the center axis of the floor. The vanity cabinetry on the right side of the room is constructed as an inset style and is finished in a mirror-gloss white lacquer. The client's storage needs consisting of a trash can, drawers to house curling irons and a blow dryer as well as the ability to sit while grooming for both clients is an important part of the design. The layering of both highly polished and matte honed surfaces makes this simple white and gray palette both visually and texturally exciting. The huge glass and tile mosaic accent wall inside the shower is reflected in the adjacent vanity mirror wall. The custom mirrors, in order to eliminate visual distractions of any type of media, offer two televisions behind the mirrors for both owners to view their own programming while at the vanity or while in the shower or water closet. Two separate toilets with bidet function offer the latest in modern cleansing, and the heated floors offer a comfortable respite in this new classic master bath. New House on Old Town Road — The client's busy lifestyle was what drew them to the idea of living on a farm. It could be their sanctuary, their retreat from the hustle and bustle. The master bathroom was to be a key part the experience, with a connection to the outdoors. The space was long and narrow with a soaring ceiling, making it challenging to create a space that felt warm and intimate. We wanted the lightness and simplicity of only glass enclosures for the water closet and shower. We found a stonemason to clad the outer wall in an authentic old European style and integrate the plumbing fixtures. We clad the opposite wall in reclaimed barn wood and French doors that lead to a private patio. The 18' long floating vanity is a dramatic feature, grounds the space and leaves the floor space open underneath. The custom mirror has horizontal led panels to properly light up the face. Lots of ceiling lighting was required to light the space adequately. Lighting was added under the vanity for mood/night lighting and a pretty chandelier dropped over the tub. The concrete is warm underfoot with radiant heat and provided for a curbless shower. The wall textures provide interest without taking away from the view. All-black fixtures stand out against the soft colored backdrop and tie in the windows.
