MAY 2021 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 39 Soft Spanish Jewel Box — An empty nester couple desired a Spanish style in their newly constructed home, and wanted the powder room to be a "Spanish jewel box" with a copper vessel sink and storage. The clients wanted something that said "wow" without feeling overly ornate with Spanish tile. It was decided to add a foyer at the door of the powder room, as it was off the main hall near the kitchen. In addition to adding privacy for guests, it would serve as a buffer by adding space between the powder room and the kitchen, resulting in diminished toilet noise in the kitchen. The foyer added cabinet storage while reducing the size of the powder room, resulting in a jewel box-like energy. I designed the vanity to accommodate the copper vessel sink selected and the wall-hung faucet. A wood and copper craftsman constructed the vanity to my specifications using reclaimed wood and metal. Water-repellent Stickwood was specified for the plumbing wall, and Vahallan wallpaper was hung on the remaining three walls, resulting in a Spanish vibe with reduced reverberation of sound. A mirror constructed of copper remnants that mimicked the wallpaper and vanity countertop was designed. Big Bang on Blenheim — The clients were downsizing but still wanted the home to be functional with plentiful amounts of storage. Their aesthetic was anything but conventional; they wanted a bold and dramatic home to match their personalities and fashion design style. The clients were concerned that the powder room was so small that they could not create the drama they had envisioned. However, we ensured the clients that the powder room would be just as grand and showy as the rest of the house without being overwhelming in the small space. The clients loved metallics, so we tiled the perimeter walls in a pewter 3-D metallic hexagon tile. The metallic tile has the drama but also gives depth. The architect ' s plans had no linen storage near the powder room, and the clients wanted some storage, so we created storage in the vanity for items and linens. We designed different layers of lighting so that the room could be dark and moody for an evening event or brighter in the daytime. Wainscot walls are throughout the home, so we incorporated them here for continuity. A beautiful sparkly natural stone counter with a significant mitered return creates a strong focal point against the light walls.
