Reinventing
Michigan
It was a lofty goal –
dispatching journalism
students across the state to
dig up stories of renewal
and hope in a dismal
economy – but Micheline
Maynard's class rose to
the challenge this year.
The stories they found are intriguing – including a 100
percent organic farm in Alma, a microbrewery in Sparta,
a spray of niche, independent start-ups in Detroit and
a one-stoplight community that worked to reclaim its
elementary school when it was in danger of closing.
Maynard, the Donald Reynolds Visiting Professor of Business
Journalism at CMU and a former Detroit bureau chief for the
New York Times, oversaw the project. "Michigan's future rests on
its brightest young talents and their willingness to help the state
reinvent itself," she writes at reinventingmichigan.com. •
Glamourama
It was fashion with a twist
of Hollywood at the annual
Threads Fashion Show, where
apparel merchandising and
design students took cues
from films like "Memoirs
of a Geisha," "Alice in
Wonderland" and "The Dark
Knight" to create ensembles
that rocked the runway. •

CMU graduate students started moving into brand new oncampus apartments this summer. The one-, two- and fourbedroom suites feature full kitchens with granite countertops and
stainless steel appliances, as well as in-unit laundry rooms.
It makes working all night on a dissertation, well, a little more enjoyable. •
