Choosing which type will work best to manage your practice may seem daunting, but if you take into account your practice needs and goals, it's not as hard as it seems. Minimize your confusion about this decision by discussing these questions with your team: • What exactly do you want your software to do? Considering your practice goals, discuss what practice functions could be automated to save time and effort. If you're switching to a new platform, consider what your current system does well and what it lacks. • What are the overall costs? Think about upfront and long-term costs for setup, data conversion, cost per user, updates, software upgrades, ongoing training, and support. • How much accessibility do you need? Do you need to be able to access patient records when you're not physically in the practice? Does functionality on tablets and mobile phones need to be seamless? • How well can it communicate with clients? Does the software offer the ability to schedule appointments, send reminders, and share news and specials with pet owners? • How easy will integration be? Is the software compatible with other software platforms, apps or equipment your practice is using? • How robust are reporting and data analysis? Consider what you want to capture and how reports are generated. • How much training and technical support are included or available? In addition to live training, does the company offer phone or video training, online tutorials, and chat capabilities? Also consider how much experience the vendor has in onboarding practices like yours. • Is it scalable? This is a must if you plan to add services and expand your practice base in the future. • What are the longer-term plans for your practice? Think about how this software is going to grow with your practice for the next 5, 10, and 15 years. Be sure the solution you invest in can continue to meet your needs for years to come. The bottom line Purchasing practice management software is a big deal. Innovative software solutions are proliferating, and the decision about which type is most appropriate for your practice can be a difficult one. Do your research. Consult with practices similar to yours that are already using the software you are considering. Ask what they like—and don't like—about it, how easy it was to implement, how much training and support is provided, and the like. Also, check out user review websites like Capterra or G2 Crowd to see what other practitioners are saying about the software you're considering. Most providers, like Covetrus, will allow practices to "try before you buy." Have multiple team members test the software for a period of time before committing to buy. Once you've narrowed down your choices and selected two or three software products, ask your team to provide feedback on the functionality of each. Cloud and proud Ready to make your move?
