56 I ICT TODAY Most notably, ASTM E3037, Standard Test Method for Measuring Relative Movement Capabilities of Through-Penetration Firestop Systems, was issued as a standardized method to assess the ability of firestop systems to experience movement while attaining their expected firestopping performance. The standard provides the testing criteria for movement of a system with a specific amplitude and sequence using a movement cycling test apparatus. As shown in Figure 6, samples are tested in two directions, the Z direction, which is parallel to the penetrant, and the Y direction, which is perpendicular to the penetrant. Once the system is subjected to movement cycling, it is then tested to the applicable fire test standard, such as ASTM E814 or UL 1479, to ensure the firestop system will perform as intended in the event of a fire. Like ratings for other additional attributes of fire- stop systems, such as air leakage (L-rating), the resulting "M-rating" can be included on the listing. With that rating, the movement criteria can be specified, and if movement occurs within the tested range, the firestop system is expected to perform as intended. As with airflow control, is there a difference in movement performance between firestop system technologies? An example of UL system listings with reference to M-ratings for "preformed," re-penetrable technology is shown in Table 2. FIGURE 6: According to ASTM E3037, samples are tested in two directions, parallel to the penetrant (Z) and perpendicular to the penetrant (Y) in order to assess performance during movement.
