Looking Forward to 2022—Changes to
NFPA 72—Cybersecurity and Best Practices
By Denise Pappas
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) publishes more than 300 consensus codes and standards
intended to minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other life and property safety risks. Administered by
more than 250 technical committees with approximately 8,000 volunteers, NFPA codes and standards are
adopted and used throughout the world. The NFPA Codes are written every three years.
The 2022 edition of the NFPA 72 Fire Alarm and Signaling Code includes significant changes. Two of the
most noteworthy are the addition of Chapter 11, Cybersecurity, and the option of allowing remote access into
fire alarm and signaling system control units.
