70 I ICT TODAY THEME 6: After the Breach: Making Improvements to Stop the Next Breach A significant cyber breach can be devastating to an org- anization, and experiencing a second breach on the heels of the first is far more catastrophic. This is why business leaders always ask, "What are we doing to keep this from happening again?" It is a pivotal question, especially for a security team whose performance is likely under a microscope. If mishandled, the team may never regain leaders' confidence. Answer it well, and the team will not only win back leadership trust, but also lay the foundation for a stronger security program moving forward. • Expedite recovery. • Test new controls. • Conduct a lessons-learned process. • Secure executive buy-in. • Perform a technical assessment. • Perform a programmatic assessment. • Develop a roadmap. • Execute with accountability. • Test the progress made. IN SUMMARY There is much going on in the cybersecurity world today, and it will continue to evolve in the days, weeks, months and years ahead. As people in all industries, including ICT, look forward to the future, it is always wise to take a moment, pause, and reflect on where technology has been and how far technology has come—and take those lessons learned and apply them to the development of new cybersecurity standards for fire and life safety.
