Some cartridge fi lters feature open-pleat spacing that better utilizes the media pack, resulting in more uniform air- fl ow through the cartridge and more effi cient performance at a lower aver- age pressure drop. Wider pleat spac- ing also allows dust to release more readily during pulse cleaning. As a re- sult, overall performance is enhanced, leading to consistent, uniform airfl ow, extended fi lter life, reduced mainte- nance costs, and fewer costly produc- tion shutdowns. Consider air recirculation down- stream of the dust collector In regions with very hot or cold out- door environments, air recirculation should be considered. By recirculat- ing heated or cooled air back through the plant, the cost to replace that con- ditioned air is reduced and/or elim- inated. The energy savings can be considerable. Most dust collection equipment suppliers can provide cost calculation software that enables engi- neers to project savings based on sys- tem airfl ow, geographic location, local utility costs, and other factors. When recirculating air downstream of the collector, the addition of a HEPA after-fi lter system is recommended for all applications and is required when fi ltering hazardous or toxic dusts. The HEPA fi lters provide backup protection as well as a fi nal scrub of the air before it goes back into the facility. Ductwork and a transition section are usually re- quired to connect this secondary fi lter module to the dust collection system. For some applications, integrated de- signs are available in which the af- ter-fi lter is mounted on top of the col- lector so that no additional fl oor space is required. Safe-change containment HEPA fi lter systems are also available depending on the application and need. Design and selection of after-fi l- ter compoments should be based on a risk assessment. When a HEPA after-fi l- ter is used on a collector handling an explosive dust, this system–along with the dust collector and ductwork–must also comply with NFPA standards for combustible dust handling. David A. Steil is Pharmaceutical Man- ager at Camfi l Air Pollution Control (APC), where his responsibilities in- clude global sales and marketing to the pharmaceutical/nutraceutical in- dustries. He previously spent 12 years with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in the corporate Environment, Health, and Safety group. Steil is a member of the International Society for Pharmaceuti- cal Engineering (ISPE) and the Amer- ican Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Camfi l APC is a leading man- ufacturer of dust collection equipment and part of Camfi l Inc., the largest air fi lter manufacturer in the world.
