What does it mean to you to sit on ABC's Board of Directors? Caleb: I am honored to serve on the Board representing fellow growers. I wanted to get involved with the Board to have input in how grower funds were invested, to ensure that growing almonds in California remains economically viable and environmentally sustainable over the long-term. Mark: ABC is recognized as the best of the federal marketing order organizations. There's tremendous value in collective investment and synergy and working to further mutual interests. 90% of what we all deal with on a monthly basis is the same issues. We approach these by using our collaborative shared interest to advance food safety, understand the nutritional benefits of almonds, and open new markets for almonds around the world. That shared commitment has made almonds one of the most successful specialty crops. What about the industry do you most appreciate and take pride in? Caleb: The industry's foresight to invest in research to effectively promote California almonds, particularly nutrition research, which has been instrumental in growing demand globally. More recent research initiatives include biomass research focused on optimizing the value of almond coproducts to derive additional value for growers and handlers. Mark: Prior to coming to Blue Diamond and the almond industry, my career revolved around pizza, pie, and ice cream. Working with the almond industry is more aligned with my decision to take care of my health and eat better. I love that everything we do is part of health and wellness and fits in with my personal values. What industry accomplishment are you most proud of? Caleb: Adoption of microirrigation by growers representing 85% of almond acreage, which has effectively reduced water usage and simultaneously improved fertigation practices. Mark: There have been several, certainly. But I feel the best, most enduring accomplishment over the last few decades has been the industry's collective investment in nutritional research surrounding almonds. As a result, we've been able to clearly communicate to consumers around the world that almonds provide a broad array of nutritional benefits. It's gratifying to see consumers "get it" and understand the real benefits. What advice would you give someone starting off in the almond industry? Caleb: Don't be afraid to roll up your sleeves and get dirty. For me, learning hands-on, in the orchard is very effective and rewarding. There are many great resources available to facilitate on-farm learning provided by your local PCA to UCCE farm advisors to industry reps to ABC staff. With respect to Almond Board meetings, I encourage you to make time and come to a meeting, all of which are open to the industry members. Join us in-person or virtually and see how the Almond Board is working for you. Mark: Many times, when you are new to an industry or organization, you assume that your boss or your boss's boss has it all figured out. The truth is that nobody does. With maturity, you learn that when you see an opportunity, it's probably a chance to step up early and lead. So, my advice is to continually look for opportunities to make a difference. What's your favorite way to eat almonds? Caleb: Au natural! I particularly enjoy eating almonds right off the tree as I'm checking our orchards to coordinate harvest. At other times during the year, I keep a Ziploc bag of raw almonds close by for my go-to healthy snack. Mark: My favorite is our Blue Diamond Black Truffle gourmet almonds with a nice California Cabernet or bourbon. Caleb Gervase Grower, Van Duyn Farms, Inc.
