This trend is seeing cross-pollination between brewers and confectioners in creating new varieties of candies. "We had experimented with beer brittle at the brewery a few years ago, and thought, this tastes good," recalls Beth Marcus, co-owner and business manager of Cape Cod Beer, a brewery in Hyannis, Mass. The brewers pitched the idea to some of the local candy producers to see if someone could come up with the right recipe. Cabot's Candy, Provincetown, Mass., visited the brewery, took away various beers to experiment with and returned with beer brittle samples. The brittle, made with Cape Cod Red Ale, was first sold at the brewery's retail store. That proved so successful that the brewers decided to sell beer brittle to their package store customers. (The microbrewery self-distributes.) "All of a sudden we were in the brittle business," Marcus says. That spawned other collaborations. Cape Cod Beer retails a line called Pocasset Pretzels, whose maker experimented with Cape Cod Porter, creating a dark beer– flavored ganache to coat the pretzels. Let Saucy Mama® do the work for you.
