FIELD/WORK One suggested approach is to mitigate the potential for damage by using building materials that meet or exceed the MiamiDade County Building Code in new construction and retrofit projects. Reynobond with KEVLAR provides superior impact resistance to protect the building envelope in the same way that KEVLAR works when used as a protective barrier around jet turbine blades on aircraft, where its superior impact resistance helps shield passengers from flying debris should an explosion occur. Reynobond with KEVLAR can be rolled, routed, drilled and fabricated to meet the most complex design specifications such as angles and curves, while offering the flat, smooth and consistent surface of ACM. The initial costs to fabricate and install Reynobond with KEVLAR are in line with those of traditional materials because no additional backer material is required. And when finished with a Reynobond with EcoClean™ coating, the cleaning power of the titanium dioxide compound in the coating will help to keep the surface of the panels clean while also cleaning the air around it, minimizing the lifetime maintenance costs for the building. Kawneer and Traco's hurricane-resistant products help to reduce the chain of destruction in hurricane and violent storm conditions by minimizing the building envelope's vulnerability to penetration by wind-borne debris. They meet the testing standards for wind-borne debris as set forth in Florida Building Code (FBC) Protocols TAS 201, TAS 202 and TAS 203 as well as in the ASTM continued E 1886 and 1996, which are now referenced by a growing list of states to mandate the use of hurricane-resistant products. Many have been independently tested and have received Notices of Acceptance (NOAs) issued by the Miami-Dade County Building Code Compliance Office (BCCO). Reynobond, Kawneer and Traco, sister companies of Alcoa BCS, all provide hurricane-resistant products that protect property while achieving architectural vision—demonstrating how quality materials can be used to deliver innovative, integrated solutions. George Rosado is the commercial director for Alcoa Architectural Products, Eastman, GA.
