Fifty years later Endre Mester accidently discovered the bio- stimulatory property of certain wavelengths of light when performing experiments on rat cancer. From the first inception of Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER), the use of lasers, laser light, and LED's have grown to become an integral part of our daily life, from communications and entertainment to medical, industrial, and military applications. Our understanding of laser-tissue interactions and photobiomodulation has been growing rapidly, and the use of laser therapy for a wide range of dermatologic, musculoskeletal, and neurologic conditions continues to grow. Novel applications are being researched and employed due to laser's unique ability to improve and resolve conditions that have traditionally been less responsive to other current therapeutic options. The list continues and sometimes seems endless. But much like the selectivity and specificity of antibiotics, not all lasers can treat all things. A single wavelength with a single predominant delivery mode will have more limited applications and effects than having multiple wavelengths, delivery modes, and dosage options. Even with similar conditions, laser treatments and parameters may need to be adjusted based on patient variables such as skin pigmentation, hydration, vascularity, chronicity, severity, as well as patient response and progression. The laser must have the capability and the user must have the training or available guidance to make these adjustments so as to generate measurable and consistent results on the widest number of patients and conditions. Studies deliver dosage ranges from as low as 1-2 J/cm2 to as much as 20-30 J/cm2. To safely and efficiently deliver this wide range of dosages to the heterogenous collection of patients and conditions encountered in a typical veterinary practice requires a laser with wide power adjustability from 500 mW (0.5 W) to as high 30 W. Variable delivery modes are also used in many studies. Research indicates that pulsing variables enhance laser therapy outcomes over continuous wave (CW) alone in many conditions. Based on the current body of research, all these parameters can be/should be available in order to optimize photobiomodulating effects and, therefore, produce the very best overall clinical outcomes related to tissue healing, function, comfort, mobility, and performance. Luckily, there are products available with all four therapeutic wavelengths, with wide power adjustability, and with fully adjustable pulsing capabilities. These lasers also have an extensive list of preset programs tailored to veterinary patients but are also fully customizable if needed. Veterinary practices today strive to provide the very best in patient care and client satisfaction, a rewarding and stimulating working environment, and a comfortable revenue stream. As laser therapy continues to become more mainstream, watch for opportunities to capitalize on this unique modality to improve patient's lives and your bottom line. Above all, ensure that you are buying a high-quality product, from an experienced company that is dedicated to your success, with comprehensive and on-going education and support. Consistent, measurable clinical results will translate into a consistent and measurable return on investment both short-term and long-term. The bottom line on lasers: Optimizing clinical outcomes and ROI The Horizon Veterinary System can also be used hands-free with a waist strap.
