13 the russell: the sale to benefit the cm russell museum "The task force thought boldly about the campus over the next 30 years and how our complex can impact Montana and the American West," said Figarelle. Neighbor, architect, and task force co-chair L'Heureux has been a part of many evolutions of the museum campus starting in the 1970s. L'Heureux found his role on the task force to be both a "great opportunity and responsibility." He was excited to once again be involved in shaping the future of the museum that exposes so many new people to the history of the West and to the city of Great Falls. "I was excited for the group to think big and understand that we are creating something special, something with a sense of place that is unmistakable once you're here. It is a place that our grandkids, our neighbors, and visitors will feel is unique and compels them to return to see what goes on next," said L'Heureux. Co-chair and board member Martinez added, "My hope in helping to assemble and facilitate the task force was that we would grow the connection our amazing community already has with the museum. It was a chance to come together and impact the long-term future of a cultural center that is a jewel in the crown of Great Falls. Whether by serving on the board, attending events and programs, or creating art for The Russell Exhibition and Sale, we all want to see this institution thrive and succeed in the decades to come." Museum staff members engaged with neighbors using fliers, personal visits, and attendance at neighborhood council meetings for the areas involved. The museum also worked closely with the City of Great Falls. City planning staff provided critical guidance on how to navigate through the public process to vacate 5th Avenue North as well as other permitting needs. In April of 2021, the museum broke ground on the expansion. Guided by LPW Architects, Land Design, Inc., Woith Engineering, and United Materials, a plan was developed to add over an acre of contiguous greenspace to be used in the future for museum events and activities, consolidated parking, an enhanced entry, and a unified site experience. Landscaping with native plants, shrubs, and trees will further enhance the space. Before United Materials began work, the museum's Curatorial team moved the bronze sculptures from the Russell Rider Sculpture Garden. The sculptures will be re- installed in new locations once construction is completed. "This beautiful greenspace will serve as a community asset, providing a place for gatherings and connection. It will also help visitors from outside Montana recognize the state's beauty and how its natural grandeur inspired Russell and other artists." -Tom Figarelle The museum looks forward to hosting all the events of The Russell: An Exhibition and Sale to Benefit the C.M. Russell Museum from August 19th through 21st under a tent placed on the newly completed parking lot. Architectural rendering
