How often should I exchange my vaporizer
and what type of vaporizer do I have?
Every precision vaporizer used in veterinary medicine today contains
a thermal conductivity device (which is usually copper or brass) and a
multi-layer cloth wick. It is important that this wick is in direct contact
with the copper or brass to compensate for any temperature change.
This mechanism ensures the precise output of agent from
the vaporizer.
If the thermal conductivity device (thermostat) isn't performing
correctly, the vaporizers' output could vary and cause harm to the
veterinary patient. Over time, the cloth wick breaks down and collects
contaminants. Eventually, the wicks need to be replaced. Vaporizers
also contain rubber gaskets and Teflon
®
O-rings that wear out over
time and cause hazardous leaks. These leaks release harmful waste
gases into the atmosphere and can potentially expose the staff.
These rubber and Teflon seals should be inspected and/or replaced
to ensure the vaporizer does not leak.
All vaporizers are repaired and thoroughly inspected for the
Covetrus exchange program. A full pressure test and output check
are performed before shipment. This ensures proper function and
increases patient and staff safety.
When should you invest in a new vaporizer?
A vaporizer is an essential and important component of the
anesthetic machine. It also plays a crucial role in an anesthetic
procedure. If the vaporizer is not functioning correctly, it could lead to
harmful waste gas entering the operating room. This endangers the
staff, and in a worst-case scenario can cause patient death. Many
times, a Covetrus vaporizer exchange will solve most of these issues.
However, there are certain circumstances where it is necessary to
invest in a new vaporizer. This will increase patient safety and ensure
that your anesthetic machine is functioning properly.
