MEMORY LANE
oward the end of his life, Granville Stuart looked back on his years in Montana with
disappointment. He had plans to make a fortune in the western lands of plenty but instead spent
most of his time crawling in and out of debt. His visions for wealth and fame were oen dashed by his
debauchery or things beyond his control. Today, historians call Stuart "Mr. Montana" because, in his
own words: "I was here to greet the brave men and noblewomen who…crossed the plains…to lay the
foundation of this magnificent state." Stuart not only arrived in Montana as one of the first white men,
but he was also a participant in many important events and kept detailed records of them.
Taken in 1883, a photo
of Granville Stuart at the
age of forty-nine.
