Belle Stuart was Granville's second wife. She was the teacher for the children at Granville's DHS Ranch. death in 1888 of an illness aer having eleven children. One of the advantages of this marriage was that she did the tasks that freed him to read, study, and write. During his life, Granville held many offices, some paid and some volunteer. He was president of the Deer Lodge Town Commiee, chairman of the Deer Lodge County Commission, a trustee of several school districts and the Montana Territorial Prison. He served five terms in the Montana Territorial Legislature. Later in life, he was a state land agent and a founding member of the Society of Montana Pioneers. From a young age, Granville wrote detailed notes, journals, and diaries. He kept copies of most of his correspondence. He also spent a lot of time reading, and at one time, he had a library of over 3000 books. As a result, he naturally was interested in the story of Montana unfolding. Granville and James became founding members of the Montana Historical Society in 1864. In 1875 Stuart became a financial officer in Sam Hauser's bank in Helena, where he was known for being as precise as he was with his correspondence and diaries. It didn't take long for Stuart to recognize the value was money made by faening cale on the open range. Along with Sam Hauser and Andrew Davis—both bankers, they formed the DHS Ranch in the Judith Basin, and Stuart became general manager. To be a partner, Stuart was able to kick in $20,000, but he had to borrow it from Hauser's bank. As general manager, he bought 5,000 cows and 60 horses and built a ranch house on Ford's Creek. He hoped to have five or six years to make money before the free-range would become non-existent.
