Rule #1 – You are who you say you are: do you want to be President? Then say, "I would make an excellent President." Visualize in your mind what that role would entail and how you would operate in the position. Remember, you must believe in yourself before anyone else will. Rule #2 – One prize does not fit all: men and women are motivated by different things. Men are motivated by power, money, and position, while women are generally motivated by job fulfillment. Therefore, even if it is not their first choice, men are more likely to take a position to advance their careers, while women often remain in jobs that bring them fulfillment. Knowing this information, women may need to evaluate a range of jobs to plan their career advancement accordingly. Rule #3 – Work isn't a sorority: as women, we are generally more inclined to work at building and maintaining relationships. However, in the business world, we need to focus on winning and not being involved at work on a personal level. Rule #4 – You're always a mother, daughter, wife, or girlfriend: these basic groups are often where men in the business world will view you. It's important to understand where you fit within these groups to maximize your effectiveness. A woman who has mastered the rules and is shattering that elusive glass ceiling is Carol Everett Oliver, RCDD, DCDC, ESS, first woman President of BICSI.
