MAY 2022 RETAILOBSERVER.COM 41 recommendations by 2 to 1. In the wake of the pandemic and other market influences, the acceptance and demand for integrated technology has grown exponentially. According to the 2022 NKBA Design Trends Report, 21% of bathroom remodels include integrated technology. Bathroom high-contact surface points encouraged use of hands-free and voice-activated technology, creating healthier environments. Devices offering touchless technology have become the breakout stars. Homeowners desire their principal bathrooms to be both a relaxing escape (music, surfing the web, TV, videos) and a place to multitask (email, text, read news). They are looking for tech solutions that maximize comfort, deliver efficiency, avoid problems, promote relaxation and provide a feeling of safety, but without a "techy" look. Additionally, they are interested in bathrooms that "flex" – connecting to dressing areas and laundry facilities, creating multi-use spaces that adapt according to needs. Built-in wardrobes, sliding farm doors and hidden workstations allow the bath to convert from a private oasis to a larger functional space. Looking ahead three years, design professionals indicate the top two influences in bathroom design will be the "bringing home" of hotel, travel and resort bath experiences (55%) and technology for customizable solutions at 56% . Bathrooms will leverage technology to facilitate aging in place along with curb-less showers, streamlined and more sophisticated designs that are easily adapted, voice-activated lighting, in-floor radiant heating, and Bluetooth connections, TV Mirrors, pre-heat water controls and intelligent toilets that monitor health and water management systems. IMPACT OF MILLENNIALS ON BATH DESIGN TRENDS "Besides the pandemic, another rising factor in the design trends we are seeing for 2022 and beyond is the growth of the millennial and gen X customer base, as these homeowners are now reaching the point in their lives where they are increasingly working with designers to create their ideal homes as opposed to attempting to do it themselves," continues Darcy. "These homeowners expect a certain style and flair for their homes, while also showcasing a different vision for what they feel their home should bring to their life. For example, they are requiring both a space for work, as well as an escape – leading to designs that are both relaxing and reinvigorating." The wellness trend is being largely driven by millennials. "Healthy living" is no longer only about nutrition and fitness, but also wellness in the home and sustainable living. Sustainable design enhances wellness, the look of simplicity, and transparency – all while acknowledging the practical needs of a space. Simple design changes can help maintain a healthy lifestyle. Bathrooms with water-efficient faucets, toilets, and showerheads, as well as energy-efficient fans and lighting, and recycled materials reduce environmental impact as well as create a more well-focused space. Designers are saying, "Consumers want to be able to start their showers from another room to heat up water – or better yet, pre-heat water settings with remote controls and dual settings. They want water sensors to measure leaks as well as hands-free operation for lighting and faucets." Seventy-nine percent of designers cite heated flooring as a key desire in the next three years, meaning porcelain and ceramic tile will continue to outpace luxury vinyl tile by 50% . Lighting is getting more attention as well. Bathrooms will include a more thoughtful combination of task and accent lighting – with connected controls – to create various lighting levels. Lighting considerations include lighting in mirrors, shower lighting, recessed lights, sconces/wall lights, vanity lights, hard- wired makeup lights, interior cabinet lighting, pendant lights, chandeliers/large pendant lights, floor lighting and even art lights. Lighting plans and integration into the whole home technology plan offer convenience and a new take on health and wellness desired by all age groups. Energy efficient products will only grow in popularity, with 100% LED lighting leading the way. Traditional dimmers will be challenged by voice-activated dimmers. Homeowners are also looking for overall increased natural light, so large high- performance windows and doors for outdoor access will be prominent. Consumers are eager to embrace new technologies and innovations that provide multi-functional options to optimize their homes. Whole home technology integration – even in the bath – facilitates the ability to create safe, elegant and efficient spaces that contribute to health, wellness and flexibility.
