R
esilience is an enduring personal quality that allows some people
to be knocked down by life and come back stronger than ever.
Instead of allowing difficulties to overwhelm them and steal their
strength and determination, they find a way to rise from the ashes and face
life's challenges once again, recharged and ready for the next round.
Resilient people are blessed with a positive outlook that enables them to
change course, keep calm, and carry on. Resilience is how we recharge –
not how we endure! It's the capacity to recover quickly from our difficulties.
We need to realize that the real problem isn't our hectic schedule, or
any other external factor; it's our misunderstanding of what it means to be
resilient. We often adopt a "tough-it-out" mindset, reaching for just a little
more, like an athlete sprinting just one more lap in practice, or a college
student studying a few extra hours past midnight, or a business owner
working a few more late-night hours to wrap up a project. We imagine that
the longer we tough it out, the tougher and more successful we'll be.
It's a completely false view. Working ourselves to exhaustion is the
opposite of resilience. Overworking usually just cripples other important
areas of our lives. The harmful impacts of pushing ourselves past our
limits renders our brains unable to recover and sustain our well-being and
productivity. Our brains need a rest, just as much as our bodies do.
To build resilience, start by "pausing strategically." Give yourself a
break to summon the resources to be really tough – by deliberately
creating periods for internal and external recovery. The less we allow
ourselves to recover, the more we cripple our ability to stay resilient and
succeed. In the end, our lives will all be more productive and sustainable
if we take the time to pause, REST, and fully recover. Give yourself a
deliberate re-set now and then, and you'll perform at your best and be
flexible, smart, and resilient.
