ONE
NATURE:
ate Parsons didn't realize as a child that not everyone went to school with the faint
scent of last night's smoky campfire emanating from their hair. She didn't know she was
one of few children who held the knowledge of how to identify edible plants and where
to find them, and she had no idea that field-dressing a deer wasn't an activity all kids
learned to carry out with proficiency. In fact, Kate thought nothing of living off-grid
in her family's third-generation cabin for six weeks each hunting season, and she
certainly didn't find her rural upbringing to be the least bit unorthodox.
