Frequently Asked Questions Learn more about how Protivity™ can fit into your protocols and operation. Q. What is Protivity? A. Protivity is a modified-live bacterial vaccine that protects cattle against respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma bovis. Q. What makes Protivity different from competitors? A. Protivity is the first modified-live vaccine developed specifically for protecting calves against respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma bovis. In a challenge study, Protivity vaccination generated 74% (P < 0.0001) reduction of total lung lesions (mean percentage), relative to controls, when calves received two doses of the vaccine.3 Calves can be exposed at an early age to M. bovis, leaving them vulnerable to infections. 1 Protivity has the youngest age approved for administration, with a label indication for calves 1 week of age or older.2 Q. How many doses of Protivity are required, and what is the timing on those doses for effective protection? A. Protivity requires two doses, with the doses administered 21 days apart. Q. How does Protivity work with other vaccines in a calf health program? A. As part of a young-calf vaccination program, Protivity can work alongside intranasal vaccines, such as Inforce 3®, which helps protect young calves from key viral pathogens like BRSV, PI 3 and IBR, to also protect against Mycoplasma bovis. Protivity also can be administered with injectable vaccines such as Bovi-Shield Gold® 5 to help protect calves from BRSV, PI 3 , IBR, and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) Types 1 and 2, as well as M. bovis. Q. Are there any concerns with using Protivity in conjunction with antibiotic therapy? A. Protivity shouldn't be used in conjunction with metaphylaxis programs if the antibiotic is labeled for control or treatment of M. bovis or has known efficacy against the pathogen. Work with your veterinarian to evaluate how Protivity could be implemented in your calf health plan. Q. Is Protivity effective against mastitis caused by Mycoplasma bovis? A. Protivity is labeled for protection against respiratory disease caused by M. bovis and is not approved for protection against mastitis caused by M. bovis. 1 Maunsell FP, Woolums AR, Francoz D, et al.
