e HBO series Deadwood immortalized Seth Bullock as the sheriff of Lawrence County, South Dakota. Its county seat at Deadwood, founded in 1875, was a rip-roaring mining camp when Bullock and his partner, Sol Star, entered the scene in 1876. Bullock was not only a lawman, but also a businessman and he became a close friend of eodore Roosevelt. In 1898, Bullock served as a captain of Troop A in Roosevelt's Grigsby's Cowboy Regiment, and President Roosevelt later appointed him U.S. Marshal. But before he launched his lengthy career in South Dakota, Bullock made a name for himself in Montana. 1876 By Ellen Baumler • Photography Provided LANE MEMORY Seth Bullock Before Deadwood Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Rider and Cowboy officers (some of whom, like Bullock, remained stateside during the Spanish American War) are pictured at Montauk, New York in 1898.
