Rich Charlson - Makin Tracks
Rich was one of the first four artists included in the Montana Circle of
American Masters of Folk Art in 2009 and has been a juried artist in the
Russell Art Auction since 2016, being the first wood turner to do so.
At the Great Western Show, you can find Rich with his unique illusion,
basketweave, and star-segmented wooden bowls, where thousands of tiny
pieces of wood are glued together to form a paern.
"I draw my design out on graph paper before I begin," he explains. "at way,
I know where each piece goes."
Rich also offers wood-turned Corian bowls, which are microwave and
dishwasher-safe, wall hangings, and crosses.
e Squirrel Warriors, created by Bob McEachern of Helena, Mont., make
their Western Art Week debut at the Great Western Show this year. e
warriors are dressed in leather with pinecone shields and use weapons created
from plant fibers.
"I have an interest in old things and archeology," says Bob. "I wanted to learn
taxidermy and create unique, nontraditional mounts."
Bob uses primitive skills of brain tanning hides, making cordage from
plant fibers, and mounting squirrels, rabbits, and birds to create his
artwork. He also uses his experience in carving, chainsaw, and antler art.
"I want it to look like the squirrels made the gear themselves using
supplies found in the forests," Bob explains.
e Squirrel Warriors, wood turners, photography, carvings, bronze
sculptures, jewelry, live music, and dancing all make up the Great Western
Show, says Chuck Fulcher, show producer.
