Artists Expand Definition of Art to New Levels

rom music and paintings to taxidermy and blankets, Western
Art Week 2023 expands the definition of art to new horizons and
promises something for everyone.
"We are starting to see art manifest in so many different ways,"
says Rebecca Engum, Visit Great Falls executive director. "e
applications for some of the art is crazy."
For example, John Isaiah Pepion, who has exhibited his graphic
ledger art at Western Art Week in the past, now incorporates
his art into everyday items such as blankets, tote bags, and
even socks. Pepion is a graphic ledger artist from the Blackfeet
Reservation in Browning, Mont, and part of the Out West Art
Show and Sale at the Heritage Inn.
"One of his blankets is made using one of the paerns he
uses in his art," explains Engum. "It's so unique."
ere are additional festivities this year, with St. Patrick's
Day landing in the middle of the 53rd Western Art Week,
March 15-19, 2023.
Interact with artists and marvel at their skills as they create
custom works at various events during the week.
Western Art Week is a celebration of C.M. Russell's birthday, drawing art lovers from all
over the country with a shared adoration for Western culture, style, and history.
