CELEBRATION OF NATIVE
PLAINS ARTISTS
Event Schedule
education was from a high school art class.
"I had an amazing art teacher," she says. "Art was
never a career plan – I wasn't even the best artist in
my class – it just happened."
She earned a degree in horsemanship from the
University of Montana Western and was focusing
on her rodeo career when Sammy Jo's artistic talent
was discovered.
"I wanted to create something for a benefit for a
friend fighting breast cancer," she recalls. "I donated
a painting of a rope wreath and a horse. My item was
the highest bid item of the live auction."
Sammy Jo was asked to donate more art to other
local causes and rodeo fundraisers. en, people
offered to pay her to paint.
"It had a snowball effect, I was donating my art for
benefits, and it just escalated from there," she says. "I
have been blessed on my art journey, and I give back
as much as I can."
Sammy Jo's contemporary western art is featured
on canvas prints as well as blankets and coffee mugs.
"I love seeing how my version of western art
compares with others," Sammy Jo says about the
Celebration of Native Plains Artists show, "and
all the people who come together to represent
Native Americans."
