A continuous, angular staircase acts as a strong link connecting
all levels of the home together, from the basement to the rooop
entertaining area.
e floating, open staircase wraps around four, 46-foot columns and
is illuminated by uniform square windows extending from the ground
to the roof.
"e stairway really serves as a connecting datum for all of the floors,
and we wanted to use that as the vehicle to bring in daylight to all
levels of the house," Van said.
A sprawling rooop deck – which is arguably a fourth level of the
home – provides stunning views of the Bridger mountains to the
north and of the downtown area just four blocks away. An overhead
glass door in one corner of the roof space gives access to an otherwise-
enclosed kitchenee and bathroom area, and a firepit provides a
homey gathering place for friends and family beneath Montana's
canopy of stars.
e home is essentially devoid of curves and artificial finishes,
opting instead to embrace the angles that comprise many of its
structural elements.
