While costs are a concern for many pet parents, they are still willing to splurge on food/treats (85%), toys (78%), and even clothing (48%) for their pet(s). In addition, when it comes to choosing products for their pet(s), they would choose their pet's health/wellness (86%) over cost (14%). And get this— 44% of pet parents who are married or in a relationship would spend more money on their pet than on gifts for their spouse or significant other. To pet parents, success means making sure their pet is as healthy as possible (78%), followed by making sure their pet is as happy as possible (70%). 62% of pet parents enjoy innovation and technology for their pets AND expect their veterinarian to be just as passionate about technology. Pet Wearables Pet health monitors, GPS trackers, and RFID technology are very popular to pet parents, specifically the Gen Z and millennial pet parents. With a wide range of pet wearables featuring innovative functionalities penetrating the landscape, worldwide sales of pet wearables are likely to record an impressive CAGR of over 7% between 2018 to 2028. This represents a business potential worth nearly $3 billion. In addition, the pet wearables industry is characterized by research and development activities, which could translate into a massive influx of advanced products in the marketplace. The ease of collecting specific pet health metrics data is another key attribute of pet wearables that is fueling interest in these products among veterinary professionals. The ongoing trend of healthier pet lives - focused on feeding and obesity control - has boosted the demand for activity monitoring wearables. With around 56% of dogs and 60% of cats clinically overweight (according to a recent clinical survey by the Association of Pet Obesity and Prevention) the demand for such wearables will continue to grow. Advances in technology have the potential to change and improve how we obtain and use patient data to practice medicine, and improve clinic workflow. Beyond Wearables to Contactless Monitoring Another great example that harnesses innovation, technology and workflow improvement is VetGuardian ® (Zomedica ® ). It uses a unique array of sensors and proprietary algorithms to detect and monitor temperature, pulse, and respiration, but without wired leads or the need for constant manual reads. Micromovements of the carotid artery and lungs are detected with a patented form of Doppler radar, while a thermal image and temperature trends are detected by a thermal camera. This system helps reduce stress and client anxiety and improve clinical efficiency with its zero-touch remote monitoring. Consider it a non-invasive way of measuring vital sign monitoring and supporting clinical efficiency while delivering a higher standard of care. Patient TPR and other information is displayed on web-based dashboard that is accessible remotely anywhere anytime on any smart device via the VetGuardian Cloud Live video allows you to see your patients from anywhere you are. Imagine what this device can do for better support staff utilization? In a time where recruiting efforts are challenging, this is an opportunity to prioritize support staff's tasks more effectively. Innovation and Technology in Veterinary Medicine Workflow efficiencies and better utilization of our support team are crucial for our success and patient outcomes. With a packed schedule and a skeletal crew of team members, it can make for challenging days. Telecytology, digital records, artificial intelligence with digital radiography, teletriage, virtual care, robotics and contactless monitoring are examples of technological advances the veterinary profession is utilizing to improve better patient outcomes and enhance workflow efficiency. Conclusion Innovation and technology is what makes veterinary medicine exciting and allows us to perform to a greater standard of care for our patients. While we may take some time to take to that that leap into technology, know that our pet parents are most likely there. We need to meet and exceed their needs while creating a workflow environment that provides better employee happiness and less stress for the entire team.
