9 September 2023 | Product and Promotions Guide Managing Joint Disease The same measures used to prevent joint disease can aid in managing osteoarthritis. In addition to weight loss, lifestyle changes, and supplements, there are a number of other treatment options to consider: • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including phenylbutazone, flunixin, ketoprofen, and firocoxib • Polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs) • Intra-articular corticosteroid injections • Regenerative medicine, such as PRP • Surgical interventions, such as arthrodesis. Each of these treatment options has unique pros and cons. For example, NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal effects, while intraarticular injections can lead to septic arthritis and other adverse effects on cartilage. Through education and open communication, you and your client can arrive at the best possible treatment plan for their individual horse. Conclusion Joint health plays a key role in equine practice. Take the time to develop a conscious, intentional joint care program for each patient, ranging from performance horses to backyard pasture pets. Taking a proactive approach to joint health during a horse's early years, educating clients on weight management, lifestyle factors, and the effective use of supplements, can help reduce discomfort and reduce the need for treatment of symptomatic joint disease, while also creating a valuable profit center for your practice.
