During any wellness visit involving one or more
senior horses, consider the following topics:
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis affects over 50% of horses over 15 years old
and 80-90% of horses over 30 years old.

Educate clients
about the prevention and diagnosis of this condition as their
horses age, discussing both clinical signs and preventive
measures (such as joint supplements). Also, consider preparing
the owners of senior horses by discussing potential before they
are truly necessary. This allows clients to prepare themselves
for potential future treatments, and gives them time to
familiarize themselves with various treatment approaches.
Discuss osteoarthritis at every senior visit, ensuring that
owners are comfortable with this disease and its management.
While this probably goes without
saying, senior horses require specialized
care. Some of this care occurs during
routine veterinary visits, but much of
the responsibility falls upon the horse's
owners. Therefore, it's important to
educate these clients, partnering with
them to ensure their senior horse
receives the best possible care.
