Eugenia Graves' resume is so extensive, it could belong to two people. e Huntsville resident is cofounder of the Community Free Dental Clinic, a retired nurse, an Army Reserve veteran, and a longtime community volunteer. EUGENIA GRAVES, Cofounder of the Community Free Dental Clinic Q: What do you find the most rewarding in volunteer work? A: e most rewarding organization I have been involved with is the founding of the Community Free Dental Clinic. Since 2013, we have seen about 10,000 adults with no insurance who are at or below the poverty level and have provided a total of $4.5 million worth of free care. Q: During your work with the clinic, was there anything that surprised you? A: As a retired nurse and the coordinator of volunteers, I have learned how important good dental care is to overall health. An abscess left untreated can spread bacteria to the heart and brain. Before the clinic opened, people would go to the emergency room, get an antibiotic, and maybe take some pain meds, but that did not solve the problem. ey needed the tooth pulled. Dr. Jimmy Wall was about the only dentist who would take them into his office and pull the tooth for free. He was one of our founders and a great volunteer. Q: Having worked as a recovery room nurse for Huntsville Hospital for 29 years and knowing what you know now, what would you say to your younger self? A: I would not change a thing. Nursing has been a wonderful career. It opened doors for me to join the Army Reserve, go to war in Desert Storm, become a veteran, and meet many wonderful people. Q: How do you spend your time now that you're retired? A: I still volunteer at Huntsville Hospital's Corporate University to teach CPR and at the Community Free Dental Clinic when needed. Q: What's your favorite place that you have traveled? A: My husband and I went on an Eastern Mediterranean cruise several years ago and saw some of the places where Paul of the Bible walked. We also visited the Island of Patmos, where John wrote the Book of Revelation. It was a humbling experience. Q: Do you have a favorite book? A: "e Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein and "Who I Am in Christ" by Neil T. Anderson.
