Today's Specialty Food Consumers:
They
What
Spend
The percentage of food dollars that SFCs spend each week rose from 34 percent to
40 percent, which is a testament to the growing importance of specialty food in
shoppers' baskets.
Specialty food is mainstreaming. When looking at spending on specialty food as a
share of total grocery spend, it is noteworthy how little di•erence there is between
higher and lower income demographics. There has been a shift slightly toward higher
incomes in the past two years, but otherwise the list is similar to previous years. The
highest and lowest income groups ($150K+ and less than $25K) spend more than the
rest. This might seem odd, but the lowest income group likely includes many retired
people that do not have a large income but are well-o•.
In line with other generational data the report shows, Gen Z and Millennials
slightly outspend Gen X (in percentage of spending that goes to specialty) and
substantially outspend Baby Boomers.
