companies are facing the pressure of
staying competitive in a bio/pharmaceutical land-

Informa about the critical role outsourcing plays in
today's competitive environment as well as into the
future.
Outsourcing trends
PharmTech: What major trends are you seeing in
outsourcing in terms of scheduling and availability;
advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) being
'rushed' into commercial production; and trends you
didn't expect?
Informa: Research conducted by the CPHI Cus-
tomer Insights team found that key developments
for CDMOs/CMOs [contract development and man-
ufacturing organizations/contract manufacturing
organizations] relate to rising demand for cell and
gene therapy (CGT) development and manufactur-
ing, as well as biologics, biosimilars, and specialty
medications. This demand from bio/pharmaceuti-
cal partners may in part be driven by ageing popula-
tions around the world and a rise in chronic diseases.
The looming expiry of patents [is] also driving bio/
pharmaceutical companies to invest in drug pipe-
lines. This demand thus forces bio/pharmaceutical
outsourcing vendors to search for ways to remain
competitive. The priority for contract organizations
is still speed and cost—emphasis is placed on f lexi-
ble operations, increased efficiency with continuous
manufacturing and digitalization of processes, sup-
ply chain resiliency, and end-to-end 'one-stop-shop'
