PARIS GIBSON SQUARE MUSEUM OF ART
One of the unique aspects of WITHIN is that most of the pieces were
created onsite, inviting engagement and dialogue between the artists and
the public. is approach not only demystifies the artistic process but also
enriches the visitor experience with direct interaction. e collaborative
murals by Still Smoking and Pepion, adorned with symbols and motifs
reflective of Blackfeet traditions, speak volumes of a culture reclaiming its
narrative and heritage. " We're going through a period of taking back what
was taken from us," Pepion observes, underscoring the resilience and revival
of Blackfeet identity through art.
e exhibition also ventures into the poignant territory of Indian boarding
schools, with Still Smoking's paintings and Pepion's ledger art confronting a
dark chapter of indigenous oppression. Evans reflects on the importance of
this conversation, no maer the discomfort it may elicit: "Whether you're
comfortable or not, it's about a conversation that needs to be had."
Although the artists will be absent from the museum during Western Art
Week, their presence will be felt at other significant events—Pepion at the
Out West Art Show and Still Smoking at the Celebration of Native Plains
Artists. rough WITHIN, the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art not
only showcases indigenous artistry but also fosters a deeper understanding
and appreciation of Blackfeet culture, making it a landmark event in the
art community.
