Why? Car shows! For years I've made an annual pilgrimage to Hot August Nights in Reno to be awed by the hotrods, classics, and antiques. What I wouldn't give for a share of that chrome and horsepower! When you read this I'll be on my way to enjoy the event and spend time with four of my grandchildren. Why do I bring this up? Well, I like cars, and whenever I work on my own car, a 2007 Yukon 4x4, I'm usually thinking how I can keep it running well for another 17 years. When I replace parts, I have lots of choices – I can upgrade the brakes, buy longer-mileage tires, and replace other parts with high-performing gear. The logic is that they'll last longer and help my vehicle run better. My goal is upgraded maintenance. Maintaining your company can be a lot like the proper upkeep of a vehicle. I have to make sure the products I buy and install are high- quality and will serve for many years. In retail, it's more or less the same – the best changes upgrade our profitability. In your business, the items you purchase to make your business run need to be of high quality, because substandard equipment and products are likely to hurt you in the long run. They include everything from delivery dollies to the tape you use on your shipping boxes, as well as the boxes themselves. Bad tape needs more tape to hold it together, and bad boxes need more tape. Going cheap can get expensive quick! Sometimes spending a little more will go a long way toward stabilizing and raising your bottom line, just like it keeps my vehicle purring happily through the years. tribgroup.com HOT AUGUST NIGHTS
