Building supportive
friendships
Books can also teach allergy-free
children how to be supportive
friends of allergic children, cor-
recting negative scenarios and sug-
gesting positive approaches. For
instance, a child may offer food to
help an allergic friend "feel better"
or "feel included" in a social situ-
ation, not realizing that food may
put the allergic child at risk. In a
positive scenario, an allergy-free
child may choose not to eat a
food that would threaten an aller-
gic friend. Or a child may choose
to have a birthday cake that does
not contain allergens and could
be enjoyed by all guests at a party.
Books can also discuss how a class-
room of students can support an
allergic classmate.
Websites that
recommend books
A variety of websites review and
recommend books that can assist
children with food allergies. Some
offer books for direct purchase or
link to shopping websites like www.
amazon.com. In some cases, a por-
tion of the proceeds will go toward
furthering food allergy awareness.
