44 Pharmaceutical Technology ® | BioPharm International ® Trends in Manufacturing May 2025 PharmTech.com INDUSTRY TRENDS of automation," Sar vey said (8). "So, what that a l- lows us to do when we have a lot of part variation, we're not just programming pick-and-place or mo- tion based on preset points. So, we move to an area, and then we use the AI vision to tell us, where is that exact part or how much has that part changed? So, it actually allows the automation to move more seamlessly." Reducing human error is another advantage, ac- cording to Love. "It's also a way to build quality," she said. "In gen- eral, when we take humans out of the process and we don't touch things as many times, it's a lot harder for us to introduce error. So, both quality and access to a larger labor pool are really driving automation." Finally, Sarvey said, automation doesn't just assist manufacturing processes themselves. It also facil- itates evaluations of laboratories, their equipment, and procedures. "There are a lot of inspections that previously were done manua l ly, because it's not a simple pat tern match for if this medical device or this pharmaceu- tical component is a reject," Sar vey said. "Now we can teach the AI what a good part looks like, what a bad part looks like, and then over time, shift that area all in the nature of increasing throughput and decreasing yield loss." Other key opinion leaders and subject matter ex- per ts inter v iewed onsite by PharmTech Group at INTERPHEX included Chris Gooding, general man- ager at CRL Solutions; Nicole Hunter, head of Global WMArchitect at Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions; and William Wainwright, business devel- opment manager at Iwata Label USA.
